The Data Processing Technician rating was established in 1957 as the Navy began adopting early automatic data processing (ADP) equipment for accounting, statistics, and administrative functions. DP personnel were the Navy's first computer specialists, operating mainframe computers, punch card systems, and early electronic data processing equipment that revolutionized how the Navy managed information.

Data Processing Technicians operated and maintained complex computer systems, programmed early computers, managed data files, produced reports, and ensured the accuracy of automated accounting and statistical systems. They worked with equipment that filled entire rooms, used punch cards and magnetic tape, and required specialized knowledge of programming languages, operating systems, and data processing procedures.
